Going Out To Eat — Strange Bound
28 Sept 2026 · @Giacomo Salvalaggio
Going Out To Eat came out of a stretch where I was trying to make sense of everything I was putting out.
Before the Tracker, I was in Ableton, but I wasn't really using it. I was using it as a tape machine. I'd record the masters from my live sets straight in and leave it at that. I wasn't arranging, I wasn't breaking things down into stems, and I didn't understand yet how much it matters to take a kick and warp it properly to zero. There was so much in front of me that I just felt overwhelmed by it, and I ended up waiting on other people to sit down with me and explain it. I procrastinated a lot in that period, I didn't have the right people around me, and honestly I was upset with myself for not being able to do it right.
Then a friend put a Polyend Tracker in front of me, and something clicked. No latency, no big interface, no patchbay to troubleshoot before a single idea got made. Just the machine and the grid. Ableton borrows a little from the tracker world, but a tracker is its own thing entirely, and working in that format completely changed how I think about arrangement and composition. It pushed me to experiment, and it got my creative ideas out of my head far quicker than anything else I'd tried. It took me back to maths class, writing everything out on grid paper as a kid. The Tracker is more than a tracker. It's a calculator that sits easy under your fingers once you really understand it.
I still pick it up from time to time. These days I'm mostly back in Ableton, because I've got a modular in the studio and I'm deep in learning how to warp everything into clip view properly. But that understanding came from the Tracker first. This EP is me marking that time, and that machine is what carried me through it.
Going Out To Eat is out now on Ducale, released 25th September under Strange Bound. You can stream it wherever you listen, or grab it on Bandcamp. If it lands with you, the best thing you can do is share it with someone who'd get it.
